London - It’s a time when many are raising children, achieving career success and enjoying a comfortable life.

But women aged 35 to 49 are more anxious than any other age group when it comes to the way they look, a study found.

These women fret more about their bodies than teenagers, those in their 20s or the elderly, with just over half satisfied with their appearance.

The finding was highlighted by women and equalities minister Jo Swinson, who blamed magazine airbrushing and celebrities having plastic surgery for setting impossible standards of beauty.

Government analysis of a survey of more than 3 000 Britons found only 57 percent of women aged 35 to 49 are satisfied with their appearance. This compared with 71 percent of women aged 50 to 64, 64 percent of those aged 65-plus, and 63 percent of women in the 18 to 34 age group.

Speaking to The Sunday Times, Miss Swinson, 34, said the idea of cosmetic surgery fills her with horror, and praised actresses who have inspired women to embrace the ageing process.

She added: “When you look at somebody like Helen Mirren ... she has some wrinkles on her face, she has character in her face.” - Daily Mail
