London - At the end of a long day, it can be a huge effort to simply wipe the make-up off your face.

But what if we told you the latest beauty fad is so labour-intensive that it requires you to deep-clean your face not once, but twice?

Skin doctor Terry Loong, of The Skin Energy Clinic, says double-cleansing isn’t new. Our grandmothers did it, but not every day.

“If you’ve worn lots of make-up or spent the day in a polluted or grubby environment, double-cleansing is advisable,” she says.

“The first cleanse will remove only surface dirt. The second will tackle particles and toxins deeper in the pores and prepare the skin for overnight renewal.”

It’s best to use two types of cleanser: an oil-based one to lift off greasy residue; then a water-based cream or gel cleanser.

“Use a muslin cloth, Clarisonic (an electronic gadget using sonic technology) or face brush only during the second cleanse.

“Using it twice is too much stimulation for the skin and can cause trauma from excessive rubbing, plus a potential increase in oil production, dryness or sensitivity.

“Most cleansers strip the skin of its natural moisture, so don’t double-cleanse if you have been home all day and haven’t been wearing make-up.” - Daily Mail
