London - It is rare to find a woman without a selection of creams to keep wrinkles at bay.

But by the time they reach their 50s, most are proud to show some signs of ageing, it seems. Given the choice, women in this age bracket would keep most of their wrinkles, according to a study.

Researchers photographed a panel of women in their early 50s and retouched the images to varying degrees – from subtle wrinkle softening to magazine-style flawlessness. Despite being faced with a vision of themselves that appeared years younger, all of the women preferred the image that had just slight wrinkle softening.

The images, plus the original unenhanced photograph, were then shown to 2 000 women, and 63 percent agreed that the images of the women with a few wrinkles softened looked best. Half thought the flawless images looked unnatural.

Behavioural psychologist Honey Langcaster-James attended the experiment, organised by facial fillers maker Allergan.

She said: “What’s really interesting is women today don’t want to look years younger; they want to age well, which for them, means looking great for their age.”

Debbie Christian, a participant in the experiment, said: “I would never want to look totally flawless at my age, that’s not realistic and I would just look fake.” - Daily Mail
