London - We have always suspected it, but now research has proved it is true - grandma knows best when it comes to beauty.

A new survey reveals that two-thirds of women aged over 50 have been given beauty tips from their grandmother they plan to pass on.

The research, commissioned to celebrate the launch of the new Superdrug B. Nourished Skincare range for more mature skin, revealed tips such as never sleeping in make-up, never squeezing spots and never combining bright eye-shadow with bright lipstick. A healthy diet came up top, with 77 percent swearing by eating tomatoes and 75 percent relying heavily on oily fish as part of their diet to boost their skin.

My grandmother, Florence, taught me the importance of cleansing. She used Pond’s Cold Cream as a cleanser, and a warm, wet flannel to remove make-up. She had velvety, soft skin to show for it.

She also stayed out of the sun, a tip I regret not following — and I have the pigmentation to show for it. From her, I learned about the difference a touch of blusher can make to your face. She always had a tiny cardboard pot of Bourjois Little Round Pot blusher in Cendre Roses Brune and applied a tiny touch to her cheeks with a cotton-wool ball. The effect was always subtle and well-blended — something I use an array of make-up brushes to achieve today.

Here are some more great beauty tips from the over-50s surveyed — which I heartily endorse!

* Never sleep in make-up. It can block your pores so oil builds up overnight, causing break-outs.

* Always wear an SPF — 70 percent surveyed said they only learnt about sun damage as they became older.

* Look after your neck with moisturiser — it ages just like your face. The new Elizabeth Arden Prevage Anti Aging Neck and Decollete Firm & Repair Cream has been specially created for the delicate skin on your neck and chest.

Joanna Hutton, from Superdrug, said: “Women of this age have the experience and confidence to understand the secret to looking and feeling fantastic is a combination of good health, vitality and picking beauty products designed to work on more mature skin.” - Daily Mail
