London - They battled it out for the best actress gong – but their contest for best dressed was just as fierce at the Baftas on Sunday night.

Representing the US in the red carpet clash, Best actress winner Julianne Moore, 54, chose a plunging red number by Tom Ford, while Reese Witherspoon, 38, chose a similarly low-cut purple frock by British designer Stella McCartney.

Their British competitors for the gong chose more demure designs. Felicity Jones, 31, who stars as Jane Hawking in The Theory of Everything, went for a stunning black and pink high-necked Dior gown, while Gone Girl star Rosamund Pike, 36, dazzled in an elegant black piece by Roland Mouret. Keira Knightley, 29, showed off her baby bump in a floral outfit from Italian designer Giambattista Valli.

Not in the running for the best actress gong but tough competition in the fashion contest were Bond girls Monica Bellucci, 50, and Léa Seydoux, 29, who star in the next 007 film Spectre. They turned heads in a figure-hugging black gown and a striking yellow cutaway piece.
