Cape Town - There is a new player in the South African fashion scene that is making waves with God-fearing youth who want to flaunt their Christianity swag.

Founded and designed by Khanyisile Phetoane, the brand named Dope Christian Couture makes clothing that religious parents would have no problem with their children wearing.

“It’s a modern brand for Christian believers and anyone who is proud to be part of the religion. I also think it’s for those who are not ‘so into God’. It can be used to teach about the Christian religion to those who know little or nothing at all,” Phetoane said.

The brand style is “skater casual” and comes in beanies, caps, T-shirts, hoodies as well as babygrows sporting Biblical scriptures.

Some of the styles reflect the slack attitude sometimes associated with skateboarding and the comfortable gear – big T-shirts, oversized sweaters and fitted caps – that skateboarders wear for easy movement.

“I hope to teach and inspire people by using popular verses from the Bible. And at the same time, allow kids to show off God, without the expected conservatism,” said 30-year-old Phetoane who also works as a software specialist.

“Other religions besides Christianity are represented in some way or the other but when a Christian person walks on the street, nothing says ‘they are Christian’. So the brand is for those who are proud and want to show their swag through their religion.”

The brand was born earlier this year when Phetoane was planning her husband’s surprise party.

“I wanted us to wear something different and something that the guests would be curious about,” she said. “People respond and receive it very well,” she said.
