London - The Countess of Wessex has admitted she “caved in” to fashion after realising her royal duties meant she was “on display”.

Sophie said that after marrying Prince Edward in 1999 she at first fought against designer clothes because she did not believe the focus should be on her while carrying out public engagements.

She said: “I remember having a chat with somebody and them saying, ‘You know you’ve got to recognise that this is part and parcel of what you’re doing. When you walk into a room, yes people are going to talk about what you’re doing there but they’re also going to want to know what you’re wearing’.

“I sort of wrestled with that one for a little while and slightly caved in at the end of the day.”

Sophie also told the Sunday Express’s S magazine that she chooses her outfits herself rather than with the help of a stylist.

And she confessed to being surprised when she was named on Vanity Fair’s best-dressed list this year.
