Durban - Young designers were put through their paces by experts at the KZN Fashion Council (KZNFC) offices at the weekend.

Ten designers presented collections to industry stalwarts Lucilla Booyzen, chief executive of SA Fashion Week (SAFW), fashion expert Greg Wallis and designer Terrence Bray, who advised on the aesthetics and workability of the garments, assessed their marketability and pondered whether they would shine at SAFW Autumn Winter Collections in Johannesburg next week.

The designers, all of whom either supply retailers or have their own stores, have completed the KZNFC’s three-month 21 Steps to Retail course, which has taught them the basics of how to turn creative designs into income.

The trio of experts looked at pricing, fabric selection, pattern making, manufacturing and other aspects, and suggested ways to make garments more marketable as well as more effective on the ramp.

“Fashion design is not just about making beautiful clothes,” said Booyzen.

“Designers also need to make money – and many don’t know how to turn their talent into income. The course addressed that.”

A maximum of six designers will show ranges on the ramp at SAFW and all will have an opportunity to showcase their work in the Buyers’ Lounge that follows the shows.
