Durban - Four student designers from the Durban University of Technology (DUT) have cracked the nod to take part in the Nedbank Cup Football Fan Fashion project. They will show their designs in Johannesburg on May 14.

Mongezi Gumede, Tamlyn Bergoff, Leandi Mulder and Safyia Noor Mahomed, who were named in a function at DUT recently, will join students from fashion design schools in Johannesburg and Cape Town, and collaborate with 16 football superfans and 16 top designers to design pieces inspired by superfans’ colours and iconography.

Students will have to present storyboards and garments to judges and will be judged on concept, originality, execution and quality of the final garment, and how they portray the superfans’ colours and iconography

Now in its second year, the campaign celebrates football’s superfans – the enthusiastic supporters who paint their faces in their team colours and create elaborate headgear to spur on their teams.

Durban designers Mike Narainsamy, Terrence Bray, Zama Mathe and Kathrin Kidger will mentor the Durban four and each student designer is also paired with a superfan:

* Mongezi Gumede is paired with Sgcino Mfundisi and designer Mike Narainsamy (AmaZulu).

* Tamlyn Bergoff is paired with Fefe Sonti and Terrence Bray (Kaizer Chiefs).

* Leandi Mulder is paired with Magogo Pule and Zama Mathe (Mpumalanga Black Aces).

* Safyia Noor Mahomed is paired with Surprise Ngobeni and Kathrin Kidger (Polokwane City).

The established designers will create couture garments in team-inspired colours, adding to the fashion fest.

The winning design team wins a trophy and a chance to design an off-the-pitch kit for the Nedbank Ke Yona team that will play against the Nedbank Cup Champions in September.
