High price of buying bridal gowns online

London – They thought they had found an affordable way to look a million dollars on their wedding day.

So imagine the bitter disappointment of brides-to-be who ordered their dream dresses on discount websites, had them delivered, unwrapped the tissue paper – and found ill-fitting monstrosities in neon pink and green.

A growing number of these brides have shared pictures of their “advert-versus-reality” gowns on social networking websites.

Posting on pages with titles such as Knock Off Nightmares and Brides Beware, they are warning others not to be tempted by low-priced gowns, often manufactured in Asia.

Samantha Tan picked out an ivory gown with exquisite lace detailing on a website. She was sent something that bore less than a passing resemblance to the advert and worse still – it was lime green.

The unsightly effect was compounded by the cheap, shiny fabric of the skirt and the wonky embroidery on the bodice.

She took to Twitter to vent her fury, writing: “Never again will I order a dress from China. Never again.”

Another woman ordered what she thought would be a pleated silk dress in a sophisticated dusky pink, with tasteful crystal detailing. Instead she received a polyester creation in a sickly bubblegum shade, adorned with plastic beads.

Many other brides said they had struggled to return the item or get a refund.

One wrote on Facebook: “When it arrived it looked nothing like the one on the model, badly made, cheap material, and way too big.

“I’ve been desperately trying to contact them to return it, but now they are ignoring me and not sending as stated on their policy a ‘product return form’. I’m getting married in 23 days, no dress – I’m in absolute tears and the stress has made me ill.”

Another said: “The dress was terrible, way too long – a giant wouldn’t fit in it – see-through and extremely fragile – and of course they refuse to talk to me or give me a return address.”

Others said that buying online was a risk they were willing to take.
