Durban - Hillcrest mom of two Kate Cole-Bowen Rabie is making waves on Facebook – couriering her unique brand of handcrafted items to customers across the country.

The former interior decorator is fast becoming the darling of local stylists and has already featured in a few local magazines.

But with more than 20 years of international trade fairs under her belt, it’s no wonder that Rabie has an eye for design.

“I got to a stage when the corporate world didn’t suit me anymore. I wanted to do something that held meaning for me and I wanted to work with people who were equally passionate,” she said.

Rabie launched Home-Industry in October and hoped to encompass “all things beautiful, real and made with love”.

She then set out to work with talented designers, crafters, manufacturers and artists, both local and international, who made “unique” products.

“Make no mistake, we are small. We are becoming popular, but the aim has always been to produce fewer, better things that last,” she said.

Among her custom-made products is the Heirloom Artisanal Jewellery Collection, which is produced in the Midlands. These are personalised silver pieces that are organic-looking and have been hand-stamped.

“Customers love that they can personalise their jewellery and create unique pieces with special memories. Wedding dates, birth dates and loved ones’ names are among some of the things we have stamped on to our gorgeous organic shapes.

“Our most popular items are the organic ring pendants and rings – all hand-stamped. The jewellery is packaged in a gorgeous leather drawstring bag and box – ready to be gifted,” she said.

Another aspect of the Home-Industry set-up is Katiwe Fabric Jewellery, which is the social responsibility aspect of the business. “Virginia and Petronella Malinga from Shongweni help us make these colourful necklaces and as the interest grows, we hope to expand the employment base. It is a bright, fun and colourful range, adding a splash of colour to any outfit – easy-to-wear, uncomplicated, everyday jewellery.

Apart from the Facebook site, these products are also available at Piggly Wiggly outlets. Home-Industry Kids, comprises dolls handmade by women on the South Coast.

“People are turning away from soulless, mass-produced toys and these lovely handmade dolls are only the start of this collection,” said Rabie.

Other areas she hopes to explore in 2015 are leatherwork, textiles and furniture from like-minded designers. “I think we’ve had a warm reception because people in general are hankering after something different. As much as we want ‘on trend’ items, we want items that have meaning and we will want to hold on to forever,” she said.
