Durban - Fashion designer Kathrin Kidger is on her way to the Design Indaba in Cape Town this weekend.

The event, which draws a global audience, champions all the creative sectors, from graphic design to advertising, film, fashion, architecture, visual arts and more.

Established in 1995, it has become a thought-leader on creative industries, and includes the flagship conference, fashion shows, expo, film festival and workshops.

The creations of Kidger and local swimwear designer Dax Martin are among leading fashion labels that will go down the ramp at the Events Arena at the Cape Town Convention Centre from Friday to Sunday.

What makes the show unique is the instant gratification offered.

If a garment on the ramp is a “must-have”, it can be bought straight away at the designer’s stand on the expo floor.

Kidger, who was busy producing units last week, said the commercial collection was inspired by “lobolo” as experienced by many women in KwaZulu-Natal.

“Although it has become somewhat controversial, lobolo is, at its core, about bonding families. The ceremonies are colourful experiences, as is the tradition in all its dimensions.

“These colours are displayed, not only in the richness of the cloth used and in the exchange of brightly coloured blankets, but in the painting of traditional living abodes and in the beadwork for which Africa is so well known.

“This background of rich tradition and scenic splendour was the inspiration behind the colours I have chosen for my range. By combining different colours and intricate panelling I have depicted my roots in this wonderful rainbow nation.”

The Design Indaba Conference hosts more than 40 speakers and 2 500 delegates each year. It includes The Most Beautiful Object in South Africa competition. - The Mercury
