Durban - While the whole country was busy with #FeesMustFall, SA Fashion Week Autumn/Winter 2016 took place in Joburg.

The shows, which showcased the clothes we will be wearing or can expect to see in shops next winter, were mostly well received by fashion critics.

Showings from the KwaZulu-Natal designers – from the tried and tested Amanda Laird Cherry and Colleen Eitzen, to rising star Sandile Mngadi of Duke – were hits. As expected, Erre, Clive Rundle, Mantsho, House of Olé and Ephymol impressed. Olé Ledimo of House of Olé showed his collection at an art gallery, where his range became a part of the exhibition. His previous collection was also very heavily influenced by art. Ephraim Molingoana’s collection featured all shades of green, which is a major colour trend for menswear next winter. We saw another military green-inspired collection from menswear brand Touch of Bling.

Coats, as per usual when it comes to a winter collection, featured prominently in many collections, as did capes, which are clearly going to enjoy another season as a stylish addition to your wardrobe.

As always, there were an abundance of black designs during winter shows, and as boring as it may sometimes be, Erre and Rundle made sure they kept it interesting. There were some collections that were too safe (read boring) and pedestrian: Rubicon, Gert Johan Coetzee, Dope Coup, Esnoko and, bar a few pieces, Sober.

These are the major trends for SA next winter, as seen on the SA Fashion Week runway

Black

A winter staple, black will yet again be a major trend. From knitwear, leather and knits to jersey dresses, black is so back.

And White

If black is in, so is white. Keep up that monochrome trend you’ve been rocking this summer, but take it up a notch with cable knits and mohair jackets.

Military Chic

From double-breasted coats, jackets and capes, the military is a major fashion inspiration. Green is also a huge trend and borrows from the military uniform. It’s given a style update by having a relaxed look, while still being impeccably tailored.

80s

Think bold and psychedelic colours and prints, tie dye, leather and high-sheen vinyl material, and of course, velvet, which is the biggest 80s-related trend And no, it doesn’t mean you can wear your parents’ retro 80s clothes. Just. Don’t. Do. It.

CheckMate

From simple checks to bold houndstooth, checks form a major part of the fashion conversation for next season. Seen prominently in jackets and shirts, it’s imperative that you don’t go check crazy because it’s likely to go very wrong.

High Neck

Covered necks are a major trend and it doesn’t just have to be polo necks. Cover up in big scarves, light wraps and loads of fabric. Just keep that neck stylishly covered.
