London - They’re either far too tight or far too loose - but men finally have a reason for buying the wrong-sized trousers.

One in four wear badly-fitting clothes because they are clueless about their correct size, a study has revealed.

Research found that a quarter of men don’t know their inside leg measurement, with 27 per cent mystified by their chest dimensions. Some 96 per cent know their shoe size – but only 12 per cent of 16- to 24-year-olds know theirs.

A fifth are so baffled by their vital statistics they no longer buy outfits for themselves. Embarrassment about weight gain is a major factor, according to the poll by menswear retailer Jacamo.

Almost a third admitted not shopping because of their new shape. Ten per cent are ‘size defiant’ and cannot admit to gaining weight. One in six – the ‘size confused’ – no longer have a clue what size they are.

The survey of 1 502 men also revealed that most (23 per cent) hate buying trousers, followed by shoes (17 per cent) and jeans (14 per cent).
