London - Shoe makers are adding reinforcements to stilettos because British women’s feet are getting bigger and broader.

Just as bust, hip and waist sizes have ballooned, so the feet of women are no longer the dainty ideal of previous generations.

The average female shoe size has increased by one and a half sizes over the past ten years to a size six, and larger, wider sizes are increasingly in demand.

The same phenomenon is being seen among men, as the bigger frame of an overweight population means feet naturally spread to cope with the load.

The figures come from online store J D Williams, which has introduced a new EEEEEE width – 36mm wider than a regular women’s shoe. Spokesperson Carie Barkhuizen added: “High-fashion shoes such as stilettos in larger sizes have to be made much stronger with sturdier load bearing points, able to cope with greater levels of stress and wear.”
