Cape Town - A new “wonder” gel which contains no steroids or drugs is giving hope to millions of people who have osteoarthritis.

The Flexiseq topical gel is reportedly so effective doctors are punting it as a safe alternative that can be used in combination with other anti-inflammatory drugs and ointments.

While the gel is used in other parts of the world, such as the UK, and has been used on more than 4 000 patients, in South Africa it was launched this week.

Dr Cathy Spargo, a Cape Town rheumatologist and chairwoman of the SA Rheumatism and Arthritis Association, described the gel as a “breakthrough” topical therapy with no side effects.

“It’s unique because of its significant advantages over existing drug treatments. Unlike normal anti-inflammatories that have side effects, such as stomach ulcers, heartburn or raised blood pressure, the new technology has no side effects at all and can be safely used by arthritis patients without worries about drug interactions.”

Spargo said the association endorsed its use because research had shown its effectiveness.

The innovation will probably be welcome news for at least 3 million South Africans who suffer from this disease.

Dr Jon Patricios, president of the SA Sports Medicine Association, said the Flexiseq gel would be a useful treatment. A number of South Africans who had used the gel in trials had responded well. - Cape Argus
