The Ford Ranger/Toyota Hilux tug of war is about to get even nastier.

In bakkie circles it's an open secret that Toyota is putting the finishing touches on an all-new Hilux for 2015, which is exactly what Toyota SA needs to keep it on top of the sales game, given how the Ranger has been gaining so much local ground on its aging rival recently.

But hang on a minute. Who said Ford's giving anything away to its arch-rival next year? In fact, Ford has just jumped the gun by releasing the first official picture of its new 2015 Ranger.

Sure, it's not all-new like the forthcoming Hilux is expected to be (granted, the current Ranger's only been with us since 2011), but it is a rather comprehensive facelift that sees it gain a bold new front end similar to that of its Everest sibling that was recently unveiled.

Ford has only released one picture of its new Ranger and there's nothing in the way of information in this 'teaser' announcement apart from the words: “Achieve more in the new Ford Ranger. Bolder, safer, stronger, smoother. Coming in 2015.”

Sure, that does practically confirm that Ford will be making some mechanical refinements and it's already widely reported that the new Ranger (along with the Everest) will come with more powerful versions of the current 2.2-litre and 3.2-litre turbodiesel engines. Just how much more powerful is anyone's guess for now.

When Ford tells us more, you'll be the first to know.
