Having been around for 33 years abroad, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class is a legendary stalwart of the off-roading world and besides a few good tweaks over the years, the modern versions follow the same rugged formula as before.
However, that doesn't mean that it refuses to keep with the times in some ways and the latest G-Class upgrade, which is currently being launched in South Africa, brings the off-roader into the electronic age.
Changes to the exterior design are subtle, and include new LED daytime running lights and new exterior mirrors.
INTERNET ACCESS
Inside you'll find some notable enhancements in the cabin. In addition to a redesigned centre console and instrument cluster, which includes a small colour screen, the new G gains the company's Comand Online infotainment system, which has internet access, voice control and a satnav with off-road functionality.
The electronic entourage continues with standard driver assistance systems like Blind Spot Assist and Parktronic parking, while buyers can tick the options list for a reverse camera and adaptive cruise control.

The local range kicks off with a 3-litre V6 turbodiesel G 350 BlueTec, credited with 155kW at 3400rpm and 540Nm from 1600rpm.
New to the SA range is the G500 model, which is fitted with a 5.5-litre V8 petrol engine that's good for 285kW and 530Nm. The petrol and diesel engines put their power through all four wheels via Merc's 7G-tronic Plus seven-speed automatic gearbox.
400KW AMG INSANITY
For those seeking sheer madness, Mercedes-Benz has introduced a new G 63 AMG model that's powered by the firm's latest V8 biturbo engine. Think 400kW and 760Nm. As with the rest of its AMG brothers, the G 63 gains a bespoke body kit and grille, along with 20-inch alloys.
Engineers also refined the ESP stability system in all G-Class models, which now includes Trailer Stability Assist and a Hold function.
