Frankfurt Motor Show - Nissan's all-new third-generation X-Trail takes a big leap forward with its smoother design, a raft of new technologies and (optional) seven-seater functionality.

It's also a true global product this time around as it will be sold in 190 countries around the world, even replacing the Rogue in the USA.

On the design front, this new X-Trail makes a radical departure by replacing the boxy lines of its predecessor with a more carlike shape that's more in tune with Nissan's other crossovers like the Murano and Qashqai.

Yet Nissan insists that it's just as "tough" as before, describing it as the "ultimate, all weather, highly capable, modern family vehicle."

There's a far more premium appearance on the inside, where you'll find chrome, geometric metallic and piano black finishes. Right up to speed with the times, this Nissan features the latest-generation NissanConnect in-car navigation and infotainment system featuring various music, travel and social networking apps.

Still a conventional 'softroader' under the skin, the 4x4 models are fitted with Nissan’s All Mode system, which offers a choice between front-wheel drive, Auto and Lock permanent four-wheel drive modes.

Nissan is keeping quiet about the engine range for now, but expect to hear more closer to the vehicle's on sale date, which will be around mid-2014 in South Africa's case.
