The 2008 Bike Economy Run hosted by Pretoria Motor Club, started from Loskop Dam in Mpumalanga on Thursday, August 21 and finished two days later at Hazyview.

The event was run in perfect weather over 950km of twisting, turning Lowveld roads, through every mountain pass clerk of the course Francois Jordaan could find. The pace set was stiff and many riders in Class D (big touring bikes) found it hard to maintain the required average speed.

Overall winner was Reg Gurnell (KTM 690 Duke) who averaged an incredible 3.326 litres/100km over the twisting, mountainous route with no time penalties.

Second was Graham Mephius (Kawasaki ER-6f) on 3.495/100 and first-time competitor Roelof ter Stege on a similar Kawasaki was third on 3.809/100 - which also earned him the Rookie of the Run award.

Talitha Henderson (Suzuki SV650), in her first economy run, was sixth overall on 4.062/100km and fourth in Class A for road bikes under 750cc, making her the top female rider.

The only casualty was Kin Gould, who crashed his Suzuki AN650 Burgman scooter near the Blyde River Forever resort and wound up in the ditch.
