Ladysmith, KwaZulu-Natal - Police are asking for information from the public after six motorcycles imported from Italy - the first of their kind in South Africa - were stolen during a hijacking at Van Reenen Truck Stop last weekend.

Police spokesman Jay Naicker said the driver was confronted by three men after he stopped at the truck stop.

“They took his truck, which they drove to Bluebank, where a container was broken open and six motorcycles imported from Italy stolen.

“The motorcycles are all marked on the petrol tank with the word ‘Beta’. They are off-road motorcycles and not available for sale in South Africa yet.”

FIRST 2015 BETAS IN SOUTH AFRICA

According to importers Cayenne World, the six Beta enduro bikes were the first batch of 2015 models to reach South Africa and were worth about R80 000 each. Worse still, some of them had been pre-sold to enduro riders who needed them to prepare for the new season.

Police appealed to the public to help trace the motorcycles. Anyone who has seen the bikes or been offered them for sale is asked to contact Jan van Straten of Ladysmith Police at 036 638 3410 or 082 558 1091 or Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
