Berlin, Germany - Several German lawmakers want to say "Nein!" to drivers smoking while at the wheel because the habit is "hazardous".

"The dangers of causing an accident rise drastically when you smoke and drive," said Peter Danckert of the ruling Social Democrats. "I want a complete ban on drivers smoking."

Danckert and Katherina Reiche - the latter from the opposition Christian Democrats - told Germany's best-selling newspaper, Bild, they would push for legislation to stub out lighting up on the move.

Reiche noted that the Germany parliament had passed a law outlawing the use of cellphones by drivers and added:

"Cigarettes are just as much of a distraction as cellphones. We need a new law, with fines, to ban it."

German motoring club ADAC spokesman Rainer Hillgaertner dismissed the idea: "Eating chocolate bars, bananas or fish sandwiches while driving is also dangerous." - Reuters
