Midrand - BMW Motorrad has entered the adventure sport segment with its new S1000 XR.

Following on from the S1000 RR and HP4 superbikes as well as the S1000 R roadster, this fourth member of the family packages the powerful four-cylinder engine in a motorcycle capable of some light off-road work thanks to its increased suspension travel and greater ground clearance.

With impressive outputs of 118kW and 112Nm, the transvers four-cylinder engine is derived from the S 1000 R roadster, and combines exhilarating acceleration with a usable rev range that spans more than 10 000rpm.

That makes it just as adept at touring as it is at sporty rides down winding country roads or holiday trips complete with passenger and luggage, says BMW.

Being a BMW it comes with a raft of electronic gadgetry including ABS braking, two riding modes (rain and road) and automatic stability control as standard, while optionally available are electronic suspension adjustment, and Pro Riding modes including dynamic traction control and ABS Pro - the latter makes braking while cornering safer by enabling ABS-assisted braking in a banked position.

The S1000 XR will be coming to South Africa in the second quarter of 2015.
