It's official - Audi has announced that it is developing a Q1 SUV but you'll have to wait a while for this one as production is only set to commence in 2016.

Audi also released the accompanying teaser sketch to give us an idea of the sporty design direction that the baby crossover will take, although you can expect this initial design concept to be toned down somewhat in its transition into a production reality.

Naturally slotting beneath the Q3, and likely going up against the Mini Countryman and Paceman, the Q1 will be built on VW's new MQB modular platform. While MQB currently underpins Golf-sized cars, it will also form the basis of next-generation B-segment cars like the Audi A1 and VW Polo.

There's no official word on what engines you'll find beneath the Q1's bonnet, although the VW Group's 1.2- and 1.4 TSI turbopetrols and 1.6 TDI turbodiesel seem like the most logical choices.

The Q1 will form an important part of Audi's ambition to expand from the current 49 models to 60 models by 2020 as it chases 2 million sales a year.
