Ingolstadt, Germany - This is the first 'official' shot of the second-generation Audi R8 and also, according to the maker, the first in a series of technology teasers leading up to the car's grand premiere at the Geneva motor show in the first week of March.

It focuses on the new car's all-LED headlights, with distinctive blue laser high beams (as seen on the limited-edition R8 LMX in mid-2014) available as an option; each headlight cluster - high beam, dip, indicator and daytime running lights - comprises no less than 37 LED's.

CLASSIC SINGLE-FRAME GRILLE

But it also shows a gaping air intake, with interesting vertical strakes to keep the airflow smooth, next to what looks like a deeper version of the classic Audi single-frame grille with the number-plate mounting across its midline.

Also visible is part of a huge rim - possibly 21 or 22-inch - shod with very low-profile rubber, set in a very GT3-looking wheel-arch.

Given the recent high-profile successes of the R8 LMS Ultra in the hands of South African teen Kelvin van der Linde, among others, it's not surprising that some of that race-track cred should find its way onto the street in the styling of Audi's new performance flagship.

The rumour buzzing around the cybergarage is that the 4.2-litre V8 base model has been ditched, and the only R8s on show in Geneva will be the 5.2-litre V10 - probably tweaked to about 425kW - and the pure electric e-tron.

As soon as we know more, so will you.
