Los Angeles - Audi's R8 might be getting a little long in the tooth now, but at least its own teeth are still getting bigger as time marches on.

Audi has just announced the R8 Competition ahead of its imminent Los Angeles Auto Show debut and this limited edition has the distinction of being the most powerful production vehicle that Audi has ever created.

That 'production' part of it is a bit limited though, with Audi committed to building just 60 of them and they're all heading to that home of the brave otherwise known as the USA.

Those few lucky Americans will enjoy a 425kW version of Audi's normally aspirated 5.2-litre V10 FSI petrol engine, good enough to get it from zero to 96km/h in an alleged 3.2 seconds and on to a 320km/h top end.

Audi describes the R8 Competition as the closest road car to its highly successful R8 LMS Ultra race car and in salute to its racing heritage, the edition is set apart by an exterior styling package that brings a matte carbon treatment to the rear spoiler, diffuser, mirror caps, side blades and, of course, that visible engine bay. Its showing off continues with gloss black rims of an unspecified size and ceramic brakes with red calipers. The matte carbon indulgence continues inside this edition, along with the appropriate R8 Competition door sill inlays.
