The tall blonde with the shy smile and haunted eyes has been gone for 16 years but anything connected to Diana Spencer, once the fairytale Princes of Wales, still has the power to stir the public's imagination.

In this case it's L449 TRP, the jade green 1994 2.5-litre Audi quattro convertible seen in so many photographs taken at the time of her and the two young princes, then 12 and 10 years old, which is to be auctioned by Coys at their traditional sale at Blenheim Palace on June 29th.

Until then the car is on display at the Grange St. Paul's Hotel in London.

The Audi is in immaculate condition, with only 33 600km on the clock.

Visitors to the hotel can also leave a sealed bid for the car there, which will be given to the auctioneer at Blenheim.

Coys managing director Chris Routledge, said: "We have put a guide price on the car of £20 000 - £25 000 (R280 000 - R350 000) but we have no idea what it will go for."

He added: "Although we have not formally released the fact that the car was for sale until now we have already had enquiries from around the world and particularly from the United States."
