Munich - BMW is planning a new small crossover to slot in below the compact X1, Germany's auto motor und sport automotive journal reported, quoting company sources.

The four-metre-long car dubbed Urban Cross is set to debut in 2017, using the same front-wheel-drive architecture as the existing 2 Series Active Tourer. It is expected to cost around 25 000 euros (R325 000) in Europe.

The small BMW crossover will go up against the Audi Q1, which is set to arrive a year earlier.

The report said that the new Beemer will use the group's 1.5-litre three-cylinder and 2-litre 4-cylinder petrol and diesel engines.

An electric version is not planned but a petrol-electric hybrid may be added later, the magazine said.
