Busan, South Koreaa - this is the only picture Hyundai has released of the Veloster Midship concept, unveiled on Thursday at the Busan International Motor Show.

Which is a pity, because this is something it can really be proud of.

The show car - known internally as 'RM' or 'Rear Mid' - was developed by the High Performance Team, led by Im Sebin and Hwang Injin, which was also responsible for the i20 WRC rally car in its initial form.

It's a runner too, a mid-engined mini-supercar with a two-litre Theta direct-injection turbopetrol four generating 220kW, a high-rigidity, fully braced tub and lightweight aluminium suspension, a high-rigidity chassis and layout.

THE ONLY ONE IN EXISTENCE

The engine is mounted directly behind the front seats - which puts it inside a rectangle drawn through the wheel axes, for ideal weight distribution, although Hyundai has not released any performance figures, probably because it is the only one in existence, and Sebim and Injin have been threatened with a fate worse than death if they so much as get a scratch on it!

However, as anybody who was lucky enough to get a ride in a mid-engined Renault Clio V6 (woo-hoo!) will tell you, it's likely to be electrifying. All the more a pity, then, that Hyundai has no plans to put the Veloster Midship into production, insisting that it's intended only to explore the inherent possibilities of the Veloster chassis.
