Hyundai has freshened up the ix35 for the 2014 model year and as was the case with its Kia Sportage sibling, the changes are there to challenge the eagle-eyed.

What you see here is the US-market Tucson model, but South African ix35s will sport similar changes when they arrive on our shores during the first quarter of next year.

Exact specifications will only be revealed upon launch, but our contact at Hyundai SA has conformed that local models will receive a new direct-injection normally aspirated 2-litre petrol engine, credited with 122kW at 6200rpm and 205Nm at 4000rpm.

Not only is the new motor more efficient, but it also enhances drivability by making more torque available at lower revs.

US models also sport a new Amplitude Selective Damping system, which promises a better ride and road holding balance, and there's a new 4.3-inch colour LCD touch screen audio system with a rearview camera.

The cabin also gains rear aircon vents and there are two new interior colours on offer.

On the outside, you'll distinguish the new model by its new projector headlights with LED accents, new-design alloy wheels (in 17" and 18") and LED taillights.
