After releasing a single teaser sketch of its upcoming Elantra earlier in the week, Hyundai has dropped a few more into cyberspace, giving us an even better idea of what’s in store.

Although some of these official renderings of the all-new Elantra look more realistic than Kia's new Sportage drawings , we'll have to wait until the imminent reveal to see if it looks as good as this in the metal.

This certainly is a promising preview, depicting a classy silhouette with a rising beltline, something of an evolution of the current design but with cleaner lines and chrome detailing, while the front end gains a huge hexagonal mouth and aggro-looking headlights.

It's a sportier interpretation of the design cues seen in its SUV sibling, the new Tucson, and the latter should also point to what we can expect beneath the skin of Hyundai's new Corolla/Focus/Jetta wrestler.

To that end, Hyundai's 1.6-litre direct injection petrol engine should form the backbone of the line-up, with a 99kW normally aspirated version serving price-conscious buyers and a 130kW-or-so turbo model for larnier clientele.

As the new Elantra is expected to move a rung or two up the status ladder, a smarter looking interior with new gadgetry is a given and, depending on what country you're in, you can look forward to Apple Car Play and Android Auto functionality.

Watch this space for more on the Elantra when it slips from beneath the covers, likely in the coming months.
