A new Lexus F model is set to break cover at the 2014 North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January - and the maker promises that it will deliver the level of performance Lexus fans have come to expect from cars carrying the F badge.

Speculation around the cybergarage is that it will be a development of the RC Coupé, unveiled at the Tokyo motor show in the first week of November - to which the official Toyota reply is "not necessarily", an interesting variation on the usual "no comment".

“ENGINEERED FROM SCRATCH”

However, the release accompanying the teaser image at the top of this story does say that the new Lexus F has been "engineered from scratch" and, given that the 3.5-litre V6-powered RC350 on show in Tokyo is reliably expected to be good for 228kW and 375Nm, a V8-powered F version could rattle a few cages - notably those of the BMW M4 and Audi S5.

Toyota has promised more details soon, including the timing of the reveal at the Detroit show, which will be streamed live online . We'll keep you posted.
