Los Angeles - If ever there was a car that didn't need an early update, it's the Mazda6 mid-sized sedan.

It's only been around on the international scene since 2012 and was launched in South Africa just a month ago, that due to Mazda's delayed local separation from Ford.

What's new then? Not only has the exterior and interior been mildly refreshed but Mazda also claims to have improved the ride comfort and made it quieter and safer.

Although it retains a very familiar look, the front end has been spruced up with a redesigned grille that now features horizontal slats and new LED headlights.

For the inside story, Mazda made design changes to the instrument panel and lower console and also spent some time narrowing the gaps between parts. According to Mazda "every detail related to texture and quality was polished to perfection" and the updated sedan also marks Mazda's first use of off-white leather.

Engines carry over from the previous range and in South Africa's case the line-up comprises 114kW 2.0 and 138kW 2.5-litre petrol engines and a 129kW/420Nm 2.2-litre turbodiesel. We're currently awaiting word on when the updated 6 will reach our shores.
