Many a car designer will tell you that creating a small sedan that's also good to look at is not the easiest of tasks - yet Mazda has just made it look like a walk in the park.

The sedan version of the all-new Mazda2, revealed in Thailand recently, takes the cheeky face of its hatch sibling and transplants it onto a body that resembles a downsized Mazda3. Can that really be a bad thing?

Although the new Mazda2 hatchback is definitely being launched in South Africa in early 2015, Mazda SA's PR official tells us that the sedan is still under consideration for our market.

The only engine mentioned in Mazda's brief description of its new four-door is the 1.5-litre Skyactiv-D turbodiesel, which produces 77kW and a meaty 220Nm. Mazda is also almost certain to offer it with the 1.5-litre Skyactiv-G petrol motor, which is offered in various output guises, up to 85kW.

Inside it's expected to mirror its hatch sibling by offering a decent array of gadgets, including Mazda's MCD Connect online infotainment system and optional gadgets like head-up display, high-beam control, blind-spot monitoring and autonomous braking below 30km/h.

But when all's said and done, would you take this over the hatch version?
