With just about two weeks to go until the automotive madness that is the Frankfurt motor show, practically every automaker in Europe is leaking like a Chinese raincoat - including Peugeot.

These, we are told, are the first official pictures of the 308 R concept, scheduled to make its world debut at Frankfort - complete with chunky double-spoked alloys on lowered suspension, seriously muscular bumpers and sills, 'double divorce pipes' and a spoiler you could land a helicopter on.

RED AND BLACK BONNET

Peugeot hasn't leaked any hard information but, we'd expect to the find the same tweaked 1.6-litre THP mill as the RCZ R under that red and black bonnet, good for 199kW at 6000 revs and 330Nm from 1900-5500rpm, driving the front wheels via a six-speed manual 'box and a Torsen differential to reduce torque steer.

Extrapolating a little further, that should be good for a 0-100km/h sprint in less than six seconds, putting it in almost (but not quite) the same league as Volkswagen's just-announced 221kW Golf R.

More details as we get them.
