It's official - Porsche's baby SUV will be called the Macan and not the Cajun as previously thought.

The German sports car maker is keen to build on the success of its Cayenne SUV and for that it will turn to the Audi Q5 - which is expected to lend its basic platform, including engines and all-wheel drive components.

Porsche will reportedly still cast its own technological stroke on the Macan's suspension, steering and dynamic control systems.

The compact SUV will hit the shelves next year when production commences at Porsche's factory in Leipzig, Germany.

AND THAT NAME?

Porsche says that Macan is derived from the Indonesian word for tiger.

In the words of Porsche's Marketing VP Bernhard Maier: “The Macan combines all sports car characteristics with the benefits of an SUV and is a genuine Porsche.

“The name of a new Porsche has to fit with the brand, sound good in very many languages and dialects and evoke positive associations.”
