Porsche has responded to a string of spy photos flooding the cybergarage, showing its new Macan crossover in various stages of undress (anybody would think they wanted us to know what it looks like) with this 95-second teaser video, including some interesting footage of Ferry Porsche that underlines his design philosophy:

"In the beginning, I looked around and could not find the car I'd been dreaming of: a small lightweight sports car that used energy efficiently. So I decided to build it myself."

According to the company he founded, the Macan, set to debut at the Los Angeles in November, is not so much a compact SUV as an attempt to "think outside the box" in creating a five-seater, five-door sports car.

And indeed, with far more sharply defined contours than its two previous attempts at five-door vehicles, the Cayenne and the Panamera, it's anything but boxy-looking.

V6 TWIN-TURBO PRIME MOVERS

Insiders say the Macan will have rear-biased all-wheel drive courtesy of a Torsen centre differential and a choice of manual or dual-clutch auto transmissions.

Prime movers are expected to be twin-turbo petrol V6's of three-litre and 3.6-litre calibre - the latter with 294kW and 550Nm - for the North American market, with a smaller engine (possibly a four-pot turbodiesel?) to follow later for the Euromarket.

And as for its South African release? Porsche SA won't commit itself beyond saying "next year". As soon as we hear something a little more definite, so will
