Stuttgart, Germany - The Porsche 918 Spyder may well prove to be the definitive supercar of the post-Veyron era, not only because of its performance and exclusivity, but also because of the way in which Porsche has embraced hybrid technology and given it teeth.

Its performance figures are, in a word, extreme, with a 447kW, 4.6-litre V8 and two 105kW electric motors combining to deliver 652kW and 1280Nm.

KING OF THE ‘RING

Even though at 1634kg (1599 with the Weissach package) it is no lightweight, it will accelerate from a standstill to 100km/h in just 2.8 seconds, 200km/h in 7.7 seconds, 300km/h in 22 seconds, and topping out at 345km/h.

It is also the fastest street-legal production car around the Nurburgring, with a lap time of 6m57s.

Only 918 of these technological masterpieces will be made - and yes, Cyril, they're all sold, at a base price of €695 000 (R9.8 million) each.

By mid-2015, the 918 assembly line in Stuttgart will be history, so sit back and soak up this 10-minute Porsche overview of what it takes to put together a 918 Spyder.
