Suzuki has released the first picture and video of its new compact hatch.

Reviving the Baleno name, the new five-door is a production version of the iK-2 concept and it looks set to slot above the Swift in Suzuki's line-up.

This one's certainly not just about new metal and old tech as its maker promises we'll find an all-new 1-litre direct injection turbopetrol engine beneath the bonnet. No outputs have been disclosed as yet, but we'd be surprised if the new unit, dubbed 'Boosterjet', doesn't at least match the current NA 1.4's 70kW output.

Besides the promise of a lightweight structure and spacious interior, there isn't a lot more we can tell you about the Baleno for now, but all will be revealed at the Frankfurt Motor Show on 15 September.

For now, though, you can take a quick peek at the front and rear of the new car in the video below.
