As we've suspected, Toyota's standard 147kW GT 86 rear-wheel drive sports car is just the starter course on a much bigger menu that will eventually hit the streets.

A punchier force-fed version has already been confirmed and now there's a convertible version on the way.

AutoBild reports that the GT 86's chief engineer, Tetsuya Tada, has confirmed that an open top version is on the cards.

“The GT 86 was designed from the outset so that we can build it as a convertible,” Tada revealed.

However, the chief did not give any indication of when the roadster might be launched.

As with the GT 86 Coupe, the base version will be powered by a Subaru-sourced 147kW/205Nm naturally aspirated, 2-litre flat-four engine.

Toyota would also likely offer a 'hot' version of the open-top under the TRD nameplate and powered by a supercharged version of the aforementioned engine.
