Geneva Motor Show - Volkswagen's Golf-based T-Roc concept, on show for the first time at Geneva, is a clear indication of where Wolfsburg is going as it looks ahead to possible future SUV's positioned below the Tiguan, following as it does in the tracks of the CrossBlue concept, first shown at Detroit, the CrossBlue Coupé concept shown in China and the Taigun concept that premiered in India.

The two-door T-Roc is intended to combine the off-road prowess of an all-wheel drive SUV with the airiness of a convertible - sounds like a Jeep to us. The middle section of the roof is made in two halves that can be easily taken off and stowed in the boot.

4MOTION ALL-WHEEL DRIVE

The concept has a 135kW/380Nm, two-litre direct-injection TDI four, seven-speed DSG 'box and 4Motion all-wheel drive, switchable through three driving modes - 'Street', 'Off-road' and 'Snow' - with antilock braking and hill hold to help.

The body-shell is based on the Modular Transverse Matrix platform, with overhangs kept as short as short as possible (more Jeepness ?) and the concept weighs only 1420kg, ready to roll on its modular 19” rims and 235/45 tyres. Not only is it a runner, but Volkswagen in quoting average fuel consumption of only 4.9 litres per 100km.
