Wolfsburg, Germany - We gave you the basics when the nipped-and-tucked, revamped Scirocco was first shown at the Geneva motor show in March; now Volkswagen has released full details, ahead of its showroom debut in Europe in October - and here in South Africa in the first half of 2015.

LET'S RECAP:

The distinctive Scirocco shape has been subtly revised with new head and tail lights, and a restyled front bumper featuring aerodynamic 'blades' in the outer section, like those on the latest-generation Golf GTI, with integrated indicators, daytime running lights and foglights.

All Sciroccos now have LED tail lights, while the rear bumper has been reshaped to hang a little lower; as on the Golf, the VW logo badge is now also the tailgate release.

The range-topping Scirocco R has a distinct look, with special bumpers and 19” 'Cadiz' alloy rims.

MOTORVATION

Under the bonnet is one of six new turbocharged direct-injection petrol and diesel engines; all except the R come with idle stop and brake energy recuperation systems.

The petrol range consists of a tweaked 1.4-litre TSI four with 92kW (was 90kW), and a new 132kW 2.0 TSI that replaces the previous 118kW 1.4.

The previous 155kW two-litre has been replaced by a 162kW 2.0 TSI that VW says is also 19 per cent more fuel-efficient, while the new Scirocco R boasts a two-litre TSI rated at 206kW, 11 more than before.

The two diesels are both 2.0 TDI fours, with either 110 or 135kW, and every Scirocco bar the base 1.4 TSI comes with your choice of a six-speed manual or a six-speed DSG 'box.

The flight deck has been updated with new-look dials and an auxiliary instrument cluster above the centre stack, consisting of chronometer, charge pressure and oil temperature gauges - as on the original 1974 Scirocco.

FOUR TRIMS:

The entry-level Scirocco comes with a touchscreen infotainment system including a six-disc CD changer, SD card reader, MDI iPod and USB ports, and Bluetooth, air conditioning, automatic headlights and wipers, auto-dimming rear view mirror, height-adjustable spoerts seats, a multifunction leather-covered steering wheel and 17” 'Long Beach' alloys.

The GT variant adds dual-zone auto aircon, tinted rear windows, front fog lights, front and rear parking sensors, a black roof lining, 'chequered flag' fascia inserts, aluminium-look pedals, mixed alcantara and fabric upholstery and 18” 'Interlagos' rims.

The R-Line comes with special bumpers and side skirts, 19”'Talladega' alloys, special R-Line steering wheel, handbrake and gear lever, faux fibre fascia trim and heated, electrically adjustable 'Vienna' leather sports seats.

The top of the range Scirocco R comes with its own styling kit, chrome-look door mirror housings, bi-xenon headlights with LED daytime running lights, dynamic chassis control, 19”'Cadiz' cast-alloy rims on 10mm lower sports suspension, special sports seats and a colour multifunction trip computer.
