Berlin - Fernando Alonso remained in hospital on Tuesday following his crash in Formula One pre-season testing in Barcelona.

Alonso's manager Luis Garcia Abad was quoted by ESPN as saying the two-time world champion would remain in hospital to allow complete recovery.

Abad said it was a heavy crash and doctors wanted to be certain the driver had recovered.

“I cannot say whether it will be one day, two or three more,” he was quoted as saying.

No decision has yet been made on 33-year-old's participation in the third and final round of pre-season testing, which begins on Thursday.

“The most important tests at the moment are the tests the doctors are making,” Abad said.

The McLaren driver suffered concussion in the crash Sunday and was airlifted to hospital for observation.

McLaren said there was “no evidence that indicates that Fernando's car suffered mechanical failure of any kind” and the accident appeared to be caused by “the unpredictably gusty winds at that part of the circuit at that time.”

World champion Lewis Hamilton will meanwhile be at the wheel for Mercedes on the Thursday' first day of testing in Barcelona, the team confirmed.

Hamilton will also drive on Saturday, while team-mate Nico Rosberg will test on Friday and Sunday at the final pre-season testing before the season begins with the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne on March 15.
