Johannesburg - A motorist is facing charges of killing two pedestrians while drunk driving at 23 times the legal alcohol limit.

The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) said the man was one of more than 180 motorists arrested at the weekend in a payday crackdown on drunk drivers.

“The driver with the highest blood content was arrested in Hebron. He had an alcohol content of 1.16g per 100ml. He was arrested at an accident scene driving at high speed,” said RTMC spokesman Simon Zwane.

“He tried to avoid the scene and drove the car into pedestrians, killing one on the spot. Another one died in hospital and a third was taken to hospital. He was charged with culpable homicide and drunk driving.”

The blood alcohol legal limit is 0.05g per 100ml.

North West police spokeswoman Major Pelonomi Makau said that Patrick Motsepe, 35, appeared in the Ga-Rankuwa Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday on two culpable homicide charges and was granted bail of R5000. He is to appear again on January 21.

The arrests followed the launch of the festive season road safety plan last week.

Zwane said the highest number of arrests was in Brits, where 27 motorists were held.

“Information from previous collisions has been analysed to guide officers on the areas they should focus on, the days of the week on which crashes are likely to occur and factors contributing to fatalities,” he said.
