There is growing momentum from both businesses and private individuals contributing to the legal funding of the Opposition To Urban Tolling Alliance (OUTA).

This is according to Wayne Duvenage, chairperson of the civil rights alliance which successfully interdicted the launch of tolling on Gauteng’s freeways recently.

OUTA has to date raised just under R5-million for its legal challenge, which is almost half of the R10.8-million estimated for legal costs if the case is to run its full course.

“We are encouraged by the growing number of corporate entities who are coming on board to support this extremely important case,” said Duvenage.

“More and more individuals are contributing as a result of both the social media campaigns in place and the real savings that households have made as a direct result of the interdict on e-Tolling”.

CASE TO BE HEARD SOON?

According to Duvenage the court case is in the final stage of reviewing all documents involved in the decision to start e-Tolling, and is finalising supplementary affidavits. OUTA expects the matter to be heard in the next few months, but said this will depend on technical delays and the appeal of the interdict, which will be heard in the Constitutional Court in mid August.

IT’S A STRONG CASE!

“Our case remains stronger than ever,” concluded Duvenage.

“We are confident that we will raise the funds required to defend this matter while, on the other hand, the government will make use of our taxes at their leisure for their legal expenses”.
