All four of the new cars evaluated in the latest round of Euro NCAP tests were awarded five-star ratings - although we would expect nothing less from at least one of them, the Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class.

Stuttgart's sexy city car scored an outstanding 91 percent for adult occupant protection and got lots of brownie points for comprehensive driver aids package.

The new Jeep Cherokee - which EuroNCAP classes as a small (!) off-roader - scored even better on looking after people inside it but was less considerate of pedestrians, and couldn't match the Merc for elecktrickery.

FRENCH OBSESSION

Peugeot's 2008 supermini reflected the French car industry's obsession with Euro NCAP scores, rating 70 percent or better in every phase, but wasn't quite up to the two bigger cars when it came to adult occupant protection.

And finally, the Suzuki SX4, the only Japanese car in this line-up, was right up there with the best in every aspect other than pedestrian safety - and even then it bettered the blunt-instrument Jeep, and equalled the little Peugeot.
