Paris - Drivers heading to France are being warned that from yesterday it became illegal to eat while behind the wheel, with police able to hand out on-the-spot fines working out to the equivalent of R962.

The law is one of several measures aimed at improving the concentration of drivers, which includes a ban on applying make-up, reading a map or listening to “excessively loud music”.

Using headphones or other wireless earpieces are also now banned while driving either a car, a motorbike or a bicycle. It will also be illegal to smoke in a car when a child aged 12 or under is a passenger. Smoking is also banned at children’s outdoor play areas, including those at motorway services.

In France, drivers are obliged to carry a host of equipment, including alcohol breath test kits, a warning triangle and spare light bulbs.

Satnavs capable of detecting speed cameras are also banned, with offenders facing a near-R20 000 fine.
