OK, it is yellow but you would have to be very mellow indeed to mistake this for a Checker cab.

A drunken Ulsterman mistook a police car for a taxi and became abusive when they wouldn't take him where he wanted to go.

Before the Londonderry Magistrates Court was Peter England (46) from Shepherd's Glen in Derry, who was charged with disorderly behaviour. The court was told that on April 4 a police car was on patrol in Spencer Road when officers saw England flagging them down.

The police stopped and England tried to get in and told them to take him to Currynierin. When it was pointed out to him that the car was not a taxi he became abusive. He was warned about his behaviour but continued to abuse police officers and started singing “My Lovely Horse” from Father Ted. England was then arrested for disorderly behaviour.

Defence attorney Keith Kyle said there was a lot of drink involved and asked the court to treat the case as a “one off” from someone who used to be a regular offender. Judge Barney McElholm said it was a “bizarre” case and fined England £250 (R2900) . - Belfast Telegraph
