With the likes of Hennessey biting at its heels for the grand title of the world's fastest car, it seems Bugatti is not keen on the prospect of being kicked from the record books in the future.

In an interview with Autocar, a Bugatti insider said that the company is keen on building a more extreme version of the Veyron that would be “a fantasy in terms of its performance.”

And the current Veyron Super Sport isn't?

That fantasy machine shunts out a 'mere' 882kW/1500Nm and reaches 'just' 431km/h, but this latest report hints that the Veyron's 16-cylinder, quad-turbo power-house could be tuned to produce as much as 1500 horsepower, or 1118kW.

This would be done mainly through increasing the capacity of the engine beyond the current 7993cc displacement.

According to Autocar, the 'extreme' Veyron would also undergo something of a radical diet, and one which would relieve it of around 200kg through a more extensive use of lightweight materials.

COULD IT HIT 450?

It's too soon to report any performance figures with accuracy, but a top speed figure of 450km/h is being bandied about.

All good and well, but final deciding factor will be those four thin rubber tubes connecting it to the asphalt. Basically, a tyre supplier will need to pull a rabbit from the hat as the current Veyrons are electronically limited to 415km/h in the interests of tyre preservation.

Nonetheless, Autocar reports that the super-Veyron could see light of day as early as 2014, although it adds that Bugatti is in no big rush to launch what would likely be the final version of the Veyron.

The power and speed war, it seems, will never be over.
