The Retail Motor Industry is running free vehicle testing over the Easter holidays.

The RMI’s National Vehicle Testing Association, with the help of participating vehicle testing stations, has created a national safety check campaign that will run from today (March 28) until April 5.

In the absence of a compulsory periodic vehicle-testing regime, the RMI strongly advocates regular maintenance and servicing procedures, in combination with frequent checking of motor vehicle components. This is in line with its support of the department of transport’s Decade of Action campaign, which seeks to reduce road fatalities by 50 percent over the next 10 years.

SAFETY-CRITICAL FAILURES

Major fatal accidents can frequently be attributed directly to safety-critical component failure. Alarmingly, in the previous free safety check campaign carried out by the NVTA, an 82 percent failure rate for inspected vehicles was documented.

This year’s national campaign is a safety-critical check and not a roadworthy evaluation. It’s a comprehensive test that inspects vehicle components such as lights, wheel alignment, exhaust, front and rear suspension, steering mechanism, brakes, tyres, wipers and seatbelts, among others.
